Why ‘Don’t Sleep with TJ Holmes’ makes Mychal Denzel Smith restless

It is my understanding that the upcoming Don’t Sleep with TJ Holmes will be similar in style and tone to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report with Stephen Colbert, and RealTime with Bill Maher. It seems like a smart plan to imitate the model of an already successful format, something not unfamiliar in the pricey television production landscape. But one writer for the Grio, Mychal Denzel Smith, says this approach is no less than “squandering a great opportunity” for being more comedy than news. Should the BET Network executives and TJ Holmes listen to the lofty claims of a humble scribe, that is, Mr. Smith? Or will this be just another fine example of “Those who can, do. And those who can’t, …?”
